What is Lean?
Lean is a hospital-wide culture that focuses on the relentless elimination of waste and focuses on providing value to your customers.  It is about looking at how we do our work and continuously figuring out ways to improve how that work is done. Lean shows people how to break down complex processes and identify activities as value added or non-value added from the standpoint of the customer. Front-line workers become experts in problem-solving and are then able to fix problems at the bedside so that they never happen again.

Why the Gemba?

Gemba is a Japanese term that translates to “the actual place” or “where the work is actually done.”  In healthcare, this is the point of patient care. Problems that can be solved at the bedside should be solved at the bedside by the people who do the work.  Front-line workers such as RN’s, PCA’s, Clinicians, Technicians, and Therapists are the experts on their job.  They are in the trenches eight to twelve or more hours a day.  These workers often already know the problems and have great ideas for solutions. Gemba Improvements empowers these workers with tools, training, and a positive environment to implement their solutions.
